Activists and student representatives have criticised the release yesterday of the Australian Human Rights Commission’s report into sexual assault and harassment at university.

The Change The Course report found one-third of women were sexually harassed in a university setting and one in 10 female students were sexually assaulted in the last decade, with most students never reporting their assault or harassment to university or police. While university vice-chancellors and Universities Australia welcomed the report, End Rape on Campus Australia director Sharna Bremner and EROC ambassador Nina Funnell warned that universities would use the milestone to take credit for reforms pursued by “university sexual assault survivors, students, activists and their families” while “[protecting] their reputations and financial interests, instead of ensuring the safety and wellbeing of their students”.
