… they are already committed to breaking.
Save the Tarkine is calling out the Prime Minister and Premier as they meet this morning to commit to the extension of the failed Regional Forests Agreement even as the Hodgman Government prepares to log rainforests reserved under the 1997 Regional Forests Agreement.
The recently released draft of the Specialty Timbers Management Plan commits the Tasmanian Government to logging rainforest reserves (regional reserves and conservation areas) created under the 1997 RFA signed by John Howard and Tony Rundle, and the 2005 Supplementary RFA signed by John Howard and Paul Lennon.
“What rank dishonesty to stand together before the cameras and sign on to extend an agreement that the state has already legislated to undermine”, said Save the Tarkine Campaign Coordinator Scott Jordan.
“Who would have thought that Malcolm Turnbull would be willing to trash the very rainforests that John Howard protected”.
“The RFA has descended from failure to farce.”
295,000 hectares in 28 regional reserves and conservation areas in the Tarkine are available for logging under the state plan. Most of this area was protected under the RFA and Supplementary RFA, with the Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area being reserved prior to the RFA (1980).
