Greens candidate for Braddon, Scott Jordan, has called on the Liberal Government to release details on plans for fish farms in the environmentally sensitive waters around King and Three Hummock Islands.

“For the Deputy Premier to drop a vague press statement opening the door for fish farms as an extra to a tourism announcement last week shows the contempt this government has for users of these waters, and the marine life that rely on this important ecosystem”, said Mr Jordan.

“Having polluted waters of Macquarie harbour through the mismanagement of this industry, the Government now wants to risk the livelihoods of commercial fishers, existing long term oyster farmers, and the tourism supported by the area’s reputation as a high quality recreational fishing destination”,

“Adding insult to injury, is that this region has been the dumping ground for seals relocated from Macquarie harbour and southern fish farms, who will now again be placed in conflict with this poorly regulated industry. Where are they to go now?”

“These waters are important feeding grounds for albatross, shearwater and a multitude of other sea birds, as well as nursery for crayfish, seahorse and a variety of fish species”.

The Liberals have failed to consult with many stakeholder groups, especially those most affected by a radical expansion of Macquarie Harbour and Okehampton Bay type salmon farming. They have made this announcement without any regard to the impacts on other users. It is only The Greens who will take the views of all users into account.
