Protest rallies across the country marched yesterday in response to the verdict handed down in the Elijah Doughty case last week.
A 56-year-old man was found not guilty of manslaughter after running down 14-year-old Doughty with his car last year, instead being convicted on a lesser charge of dangerous driving occasioning death and sentenced to three years’ jail. The verdict infuriated Doughty’s family and their supporters, who say it is evidence of ongoing racism against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia’s justice system and wider society …
