Blueberry rust issue highlights need for biosecurity review
Minister must ensure Biosecurity Tasmania is properly resourced to combat threats
The issues raised by the TFGA, blueberry growers and their representatives over blueberry rust, shows the Hodgman Government is not doing enough when it comes to biosecurity.
“This is yet another example of industry losing confidence in the Liberal Government’s ability to manage important issues like biosecurity,” Shadow Minister for Primary Industries Shane Broad said.
“Labor is calling on the Minister to immediately review biosecurity practices and preparedness in Tasmania.
“Primary Industries Minister Jeremy Rockliff must guarantee that we have the biosecurity resources in place to protect Tasmania from dangerous pests and diseases.
“In light of the blueberry rust issue, Labor believes the Minister should conduct a full review of biosecurity practices to make sure we are prepared for the next threat.
“The Minister needs to make sure Tasmania’s agriculture sector can have full confidence in Biosecurity Tasmania.”
