Government should empower Children’s Commissioner to conduct independent investigation
Anglicare report highlights the pressure on child protection
Not the time to sweep things under the carpet
Shadow Minister for Child Safety Josh Willie has called on the Government to instruct the Children’s Commissioner to investigate allegations of political interference in child protection.
“The Government’s two hour investigation was completely inadequate,” Mr Willie said.
“Tasmanians deserve confidence that the interests of vulnerable children are being put ahead of politics.
“The Anglicare report into vulnerable teenagers is a damning reminder that more needs to be done to protect young people in Tasmania.
“Now is not the time to sweep serious allegations under the carpet, it’s the time for an open and frank discussion about child protection.
“What must improve outcomes for Tasmanian children stuck in traumatic situations.
“We need to strengthen the safety net so children don’t fall through the gaps.
“Labor stands ready to work constructively to properly support and improve Tasmania’s child protection system.
“We call on the Government to empower the Children’s Commissioner to investigate allegations made by staff so Tasmanians can have greater confidence in the system.
“An independent investigation would properly address the allegations raised.”
