Recipients of the Age Pension, Disability Support Pension, Parenting Payment Single and Department of Veterans’ Affairs pensioners have started receiving their $75 Energy Assistance Payment.

Federal Member for Bass Ross Hart MP accepts that this one-off payment will be a help to pensioners in the short-term, but remains concerned that vulnerable Tasmanians will suffer as a result of Malcolm Turnbull’s axing of the Energy Supplement.

“This Government is giving with one hand and taking with the other”, Mr Hart said.

“A once-off $75 payment is not the same as $365 of assistance every year to help pensioners, including carers, keep up with increasing energy costs.”

“With ever increasing power prices pensioners are struggling to keep warm this winter, I’ve had many calls to my office from people who are too scared to even turn the heater on.”

“I very much doubt that Malcom Turnbull is thinking twice about turning on the heater at Point Piper.”

“The Turnbull Government is taking Australian pensioners for fools”, Mr Hart said.
