Prime Minister comes out of COAG open to GST changes
Will Hodgman again fails to guarantee Tasmania’s share
The Prime Minister’s willingness to consider a change to the way GST is distributed shows Will Hodgman has failed to secure Tasmania’s fair share.
Shadow Treasurer Scott Bacon said the PM’s consideration of the introduction of a GST “floor” is bad news for Tasmania.
“Any change to the way GST is distributed could potentially be devastating for Tasmania,” Mr Bacon said.
“The current method of distribution is fair and shouldn’t be tampered with.
“The fact Malcolm Turnbull is open to changes shows how ineffective Will Hodgman has been at securing Tasmania’s fair share.
“The Premier has claimed victory before and still we are faced with the possibility of a change to the GST.
“A “floor” to help Western Australia could cost Tasmania tens of millions of dollars at the end of the day.
“That would mean cuts to our hospitals and schools and all Tasmanians know we can’t afford that.
“Even on his home ground, Will Hodgman has failed to see off the threat to our share of the GST.”
