… to be featured in TSO Matinee Concert ‘Simple Gifts’ this Sunday

Hobart-based composer Maria Grenfell’s new work ‘Spirals’ will receive its premiere with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in ‘Simple Gifts’, a TSO Matinee Series concert this Sunday, June 25 at 2.30pm.

Written for and featuring TSO Principals Andrew Seymour (clarinet) and Tahnee van Herk (bassoon) Grenfell says ‘While searching for some musical inspiration to begin writing, I came across some early “slave songs” in a book that I had acquired on a visit to a plantation in New Orleans some years ago‘. ‘Spirals’ has been specially commissioned to complement the Richard Strauss’s Duett-Concertino for clarinet, bassoon, strings and harp dates from his so-called “Indian summer” period, the final years of his life when he produced some of his most rapturous music, including the Oboe Concerto and the Four Last Songs.

Also featured is in this concert is Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony, one of the composer’s finest creations, packing a whole world of Romantic fervour into its two superbly crafted movements and the Appalachian Spring – Suite, which captures both the choreographic vitality and the tender moments of Aaron Copland’s Pulitzer Prize-winning great American ballet.

‘Simple Gifts’ will be performed at Federation Concert Hall, this Sunday June 25 at 2.30pm as part of the TSO’s Matinee Series.
