• Ombudsman’s office facing more work with less staff
• 81% increase in appeals
• Situation is unsustainable without greater resources
It’s been revealed in Budget Estimates that Tasmania’s Ombudsman is under increasing pressure, with more work and fewer staff.
Shadow Minister for Open Government Madeleine Ogilvie said it’s bad news for transparency.
“The Ombudsman’s office is being swamped,” Ms Ogilvie said.
“It’s been revealed in Budget Estimates that there’s an 81 per cent increase in Right to Information appeals but one less person dealing with them.
“This is a completely unsustainable situation.
“The Government must immediately move to properly staff the Ombudsman’s office so important reviews are completed in a timely manner.
“The Hodgman Government’s politicisation and manipulation of the Right To Information process means the Ombudsman’s role is more important than ever.
“There are 58 open files at the moment with applicants waiting years for their appeals to be assessed.
“It’s clear the Hodgman Government has no interest in openness and transparency.”
