Labor wants to see a successful, sustainable salmon industry
Government needs to show greater leadership to give community confidence
Jobs in the industry need to be protected
Labor wants Tasmanians to be proud of the salmon industry and the products it puts in the marketplace.
Shadow Minister for Primary Industries Shane Broad said the industry is a crucial employer and an important part of the Tasmanian brand.
“Labor’s determination to see a sustainable, successful salmon industry is reflected in our policy,” Dr Broad said.
“We need to see less rhetoric from the Liberals and stronger leadership so the community can have confidence in the industry.
“Labor’s policy will strengthen environmental regulation and enforcement.
“The Hodgman Liberal Government has eroded trust in the sector by failing to provide leadership, failing to update or enforce regulations or apply penalty units for breaches and failing to provide transparency with respect to how decisions are made.
“This has created uncertainty for the community and for the industry. This lack of leadership puts at risk the jobs the salmon industry supports and is particularly harmful at a time when full-time employment is needed in Tasmania.”
