A new cross-party Senate committee will examine the influence of fake news and clickbait on political discourse.

Senators Sam Dastyari, Scott Ludlam, Jacqui Lambie and Nick Xenophon announced the formation of the Select Committee on the Future of Public Interest Journalism at Parliament House yesterday to coincide with the end of a week-long strike by Fairfax journalists. The committee will focus on Facebook and Google’s dominance of online advertising, with Xenophon accusing ($) the web giants of “cannibalising the content of Australian journalists”.
