TasPorts advises it remains confident that it can meet King Island’s fertiliser needs in time for the seasonal break, based on known demand.
I have asked TasPorts through its subsidiary Bass Island Line (BIL) to provide within 48 hours a complete assessment of current demand and supply capability for fertiliser supplies to the Island.
In four weeks of operation, BIL has already successfully delivered 137 containers to King Island, including 50 fertiliser containers, as well as other non-containerised freight and it has completed multiple livestock sailings.
The Government remains absolutely committed to servicing the shipping needs of King Island, and to taking all necessary action to ensure that freight is moved in a timely manner.
I reiterate that this is a short-term solution as a result of a sudden market failure, and I have asked TasPorts to urgently source a larger vessel.
