Hobart City Council – divestment petition

You may remember signing a petition calling on Hobart City Council to move its (Hobart ratepayers’) cash reserves away from banks that invest in fossil fuel industries – coal, oil, gas and associated infrastructure. Progress has been slow. In fact, the petition was submitted in May last year! 350 Hobart has been trying to nudge the council to keep the process going and on track. Council decided to appoint a consultant to review its investment policy. We were surprised to hear that an investment advisory unit within Macquarie Bank – a known investor in the fossil fuel industry (and renewables) was appointed. Council has assured us that the consultant has the knowledge and skills to investigate divestment options. We remain in hope for a good outcome.

Westpac has ruled out lending to the Adani mine project! We need to keep the pressure on our governments.

Commbank

News from 350 Australia:
Community pressure pushed Westpac to rule out funding for Adani. The uproar from coal-loving politicians and Adani is testament to what a huge win this was.
This week, CommBank has returned. New evidence leaked to the media has confirmed CommBank is Adani’s transactional banker.[1]

The evidence shows that in March the Commonwealth Bank was helping Adani lay down a $1.6 million deposit for the water license they need for their dirty coal mine.
Check out 350 Australiato see how you can pressure Commbank to rule out supporting Adani, and other ways to be involved.
