Petuna has welcomed today’s State Budget announcement to provide a consistent regulatory framework for the aquaculture industry through the independent Environment Protection Authority (EPA).
Additional resources for the EPA will be funded by an environmental levy collected from the state’s marine farming companies.
Petuna Acting CEO David Wood said while the company was yet to understand the full detail of the announcement, it supported the further reinforcement of environmental controls to ensure the ongoing sustainability of the industry and protection of the environment.
“The announcement clearly reflects the value the government places on a sustainable aquaculture industry – which provides important employment opportunities in regional Tasmania – while also ensuring the conservation of our marine environment,” Mr Wood said.
“The government initiative is consistent with previous industry calls and we look forward to working with the EPA to implement the changes.”
