Never OK is a new national student led campaign against sexual harassment and assault. The campaign believes that everyone has the right to live, study and work in a safe and supportive environment and that sexual harassment and assault is Never OK.
Harassment and assault can happen on campus, in bars, on public transport or online. Sexual harassment and assault can come from a complete stranger or from someone you know well. Most harassment and assault is unreported. Some people feel embarrassed, or think that they won’t be taken seriously.
The campaign is supported by the Australian Students Association (ASA), James Cook University Student Association, the Murdouch University Guild, the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Guild, the Tasmania University Union Guild (University of Tasmania), the University of Canberra Student Representative Council and the University of Wollongong Undergraduate Students Association (WUSA).
The campaign aims to:
• Raise awareness of sexual harassment and assault, and lift the visibility of support services for students.
• Provide a framework of resources for campus-based student led campaigns and help develop strategies to help tackle the issue and change attitudes towards sexual harassment and assault.
• Work with universities, student associations/guilds/unions, community groups and external organisations to bring change to the culture that leads towards sexual harassment and assault.
National Director Clark Cooley said today “Students are standing together to say with a clear voice that sexual harassment and assault is Never OK. We need to work together with universities, student associations, community groups and and external organisations to bring change to the culture that leads towards sexual harassment and assault”
“It should be clear to every staff member, student and those in the community that we have a zero torrence policy on sexual assault and sexual harassment.”
Mr Cooley continued “I’m looking forward to the launch of campus-based campaigns, and the various projects student groups come up with raise awareness of sexual harassment and assault, and help lift the visibility of support services for students”
