All Tasmanians deserve to lead a healthy life
Labor would establish the Healthy Communities Commission to work on improving health outcomes
The goal is to reduce health inequality
Labor will guarantee a more strategic approach to preventative health in Tasmania by establishing the Healthy Communities Commission with the authority to tackle some of Tasmania’s poor health outcomes.
Labor Leader Rebecca White said the policy is driven by the recommendations from the Parliamentary Inquiry into Preventative Health Care.
“Labor understands the only way we can take pressure off the hospital system is to invest in making Tasmanians healthier,” Ms White said.
“Labor will establish a statutory authority aimed at reducing health inequality for people of all ages.
“We have to do everything we can to improve health outcomes for all Tasmanians.
“Governments not only have an obligation to properly fund hospitals, they should also strive for generational improvements when it comes to health.
“Wellness promotion, illness prevention and chronic disease management are integral to quality health care.
“The Healthy Communities Commission will be modelled on successful initiatives in other states, including the Healthy Futures Commission in Queensland and the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation.
“The Commission will set short, medium and long-term goals to address a range of health related challenges and risk factors identified in the Tasmanian community.
“The investments we make in preventative health now will be worth even more to Tasmanians into the future.
“Working in tandem with the Menzies Research Institute, the Commission will draw on long-term research to develop strategies and policies to keep Tasmanians out of hospital.
“If we are smart now, we can make giant strides when it comes to improving health outcomes for future generations.”
