Labor will go above and beyond what’s already budgeted for health
$50 million will go directly towards easing pressure on our hospitals
Innovative plan to relieve bed block
A Labor Government would move immediately to address the crisis in our hospitals with initiatives designed to reduce bed block.
Labor Leader Rebecca White used today’s budget reply to announce a $50 million strategy to improve patient flow in hospitals.
It’s part of Labor’s commitment to invest an additional $88 million into health on top of what’s in the budget papers.
“Health is Labor’s number one priority and that’s clearly reflected in our Economic Direction Statement,” Ms White said.
“Labor will keep Tasmanians healthier for longer, ensure they are treated faster and get them home to their families sooner.
“Discharge rates significantly decrease across weekends because many services aren’t offered seven days a week.
“Labor has committed $35 million to directly address the issue of bed block and improve discharge coordination.
“This funding will increase community nursing services and patient transport options.
“The provision of services including pharmacy, radiology, medical imaging and allied health will also be expanded.
“We want people to be able to leave hospital as soon as they are ready to.
“The strategy will be complemented by a $15 million commitment to Medihotels.
“Medihotels will be staffed 24/7 to provide accommodation to patients who require access to hospital services without the need for acute nursing care or an inpatient bed.
“By providing more beds close to hospitals for patients who no longer need to be on a ward, beds can be freed up for patients with more serious medical needs.
“The cost of accommodating a patient in a hotel for a night is significantly cheaper than accommodating them in a hospital bed and also allows the patient to recuperate in a more relaxing environment.”
