• Partnership agreements to improve outcomes for Tasmanians
• Levels of government cannot continue to be at war
• Strong Labor record of working with councils
A Labor Government will establish Partnership Agreements between government and councils to improve outcomes for community development, infrastructure, education, health and employment.
Shadow Minister for Local Government Madeleine Ogilvie said the Liberal Government had launched a full-scale attack on local government in this state and that in stark contrast, Labor has a proud history of working together with councils.
“Labor would sit down with the leaders of local government and negotiate agreements on how we work with each other and with the private sector,” Ms Ogilvie said.
“Councils should be able to explore resource sharing to keep rate increases to an absolute minimum and we will work with our smaller councils to ensure their sustainability, governance and growth.
“We recognise that strong working partnerships between all levels of government are the best way to ensure councils’ sustainability.
“Unlike the divisive and authoritarian approach to Local Government taken by the Hodgman Government, in Labor’s Budget Reply we outlined that we will listen and work closely with each Council to form a shared understanding of the work required to deliver services and projects for the benefit of all ratepayers.
“Only Labor will create true partnerships with Local Government to drive better outcomes for Tasmanian communities.”
