• Labor’s $50 million Long Term Regional Tourism strategy will work side by side with $41 million TICT Future Proofing Icons program
Tourism industry a priority for Labor
• Tasmania must remain the must-see Australian and global location
A re-elected Labor Government would work in tandem with the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania to deliver a regional infrastructure program to protect and preserve the state’s reputation as a premier international tourist destination.
Labor Leader Rebecca White said a future majority Labor Government would use its $50 million Long Term Regional Tourism Strategy to help progress the priority projects identified in the TICT’s $41 million Future Proofing Our Icons report.
“By 2020, our state will be in a position to welcome 1.5 million visitors and we need to ensure our key attractions are ready for that inevitability,” Ms White said.
“That kind of growth in tourism numbers will place incredible pressure on our existing and ageing tourism infrastructure but only Labor is working with the industry to plan for the future.
“Now is the time to support income-generating, job-creating projects like the Three Capes, the Cradle Mountain Master Plan redevelopment and Maria Island.
“These initiatives will deliver new jobs for regional Tasmania and ensure our state stays ahead of the game in a very competitive global tourism market.”
Shadow Tourism Minister Scott Bacon said a future majority Labor Government would work in partnership with the TICT and regional tourism bodies to progress priority projects.
“It’s a program which places importance on projects like the Freycinet National Park Visitor Hub, the Stanley Visitor infrastructure upgrade, the Tarkine Drive and important grass roots projects like the $500,000 lighting, footpath and streetscape upgrade for Richmond where we are today,” Mr Bacon said.
“That’s why a majority Labor Government will commit to Future Proofing Our Icons.
“Today’s announcement follows Labor’s commitment earlier this week to $700,000 for the Strahan Wharf Tourism Zone and $300,000 for visitor infrastructure on Sara Island.”
