King Island freight crisis ignored in Budget

 No money for new ship despite hints from the Deputy Premier
 King Island’s number one issue not addressed
 Permanent solution could be years away due to the Government’s inaction

King Island residents have been left high and dry by today’s Budget, despite Deputy Premier Jeremy Rockliff’s flirtations with the purchase of a purpose-built ship.

Labor Member for Braddon Shane Broad said there’s not one extra dollar for King Island freight in today’s Budget.

“The Government has not addressed the number one issue for King Islanders in today’s Budget,” Dr Broad says.

“Jeremy Rockliff said the Government was “investigating” the purchase of a new ship but failed to deliver in today’s Budget.

“There’s no money over the next 12 months and none in the following three years either.

“It’s clear the Government has put the freight crisis affecting King Island in the too-hard basket.

“Why did the Government flirt with the idea if they had no intention of following through?

“Rene Hidding made a complete mess of things and now Jeremy Rockliff has failed to deliver.

“King Island deserves better from the Hodgman Government.”
