Improving local decision making in our hospitals

Just as promised, the Hodgman Liberal Government will strengthen local leadership in our hospitals as part of the final Tasmanian Health System structure aimed at delivering the best care for patients regardless of where they live.
We have listened to all hospital staff and health professionals who have made the case for local leadership to be at the heart of a statewide health system.
While it is important to have a health system that function effectively as one, there are also clear benefits in allowing operational decisions to be made on the ground by those who best understand the operational demands of each hospital. Getting both statewide and local leadership structures working seamlessly is the key.
To achieve this we are proposing to establish Executive Directors for the South and North/NorthWest supported by Operations Managers at each of our four major hospitals.
To support these positions we will also be appointing Clinical and Nursing Directors to provide expert advice in key areas (clinical streams) at the hospital level and to be part of the hospital management process.
Existing clinical and nursing leaders will transition across to these positions with any vacant positions to be advertised through an Expression of Interest process.
To progress statewide health service development we will also seek expressions of interest for health specialty clinical leads to continue the work undertaken by clinical advisory groups over the past 3 years.
Building strong and effective local management will provide a solid foundation to deliver on our record investment in health.
The decision to enhance local leadership has been developed in consultation with a number of senior clinicians which commenced late in 2016. I have now asked the THS to provide a final 2 week opportunity for our more than 10,000 staff to provide feedback on the proposed structure.
Michael Ferguson, Minister for Health
