The Devonport Regional Gallery will host three solo exhibitions in June, including touring exhibition Head Over Head which features works by Australian contemporary artist Tony Ameneiro, Ashley Bird: The Nostalgic Toybox and Joanna Gair: Within.

Attending the public opening on Friday 2 June, 6 pm will be Tony Ameneiro and Tasmanian artists Ashley Bird and Joanna Gair. The three exhibitions explore an eclectic mix of genres and media, from drawing, printmaking, paper-making and sculpture.

Exhibition dates: 3 June – 9 July 2017 // Opening Friday 2 June 6 pm

In the Main Gallery, Head Over Head is based around a research drawing project carried out at the JT Wilson & Shellshear Museums at Sydney University. Both are teaching museums within the Medical Faculty. Donor’s bodies allow a new generation of student physicians the opportunity to learn the skills required to save a new generation of lives.

“We are thrilled to present Head Over Head, an exhibition of prints and drawings by Tony Ameneiro,” said Gallery Director Ellie Ray. “Tony Ameneiro is a well known and respected Australian print maker. His work is held in major galleries and university collections around Australia and the British Museum recently acquired one of his works. This exhibition is particularly interesting and thought provoking as it explores issues of mortality and regeneration. Presented alongside two Tasmanian artists’ exhibitions, Ashley Bird and Joanna Gair, there is much for the community and visitors to the region to explore among our three Gallery spaces.”

Drawing on the sentiment of the ‘toy box’ Launceston artist Ashley Bird creates objects cast from his collection of small toys, as a way of revealing the relationship between memory and objects, and their capacity to become objects of nostalgia and meaning over time. The Nostalgic Toybox works will be displayed in The Little Gallery Project Space.

Joanna Gair employs papermaking, light and painting techniques in her latest exhibition Within in the Middle Gallery. Drawing on certain, imbued qualities of traditional papermaking as a vehicle for contemporary interpretation in the context of a personal response to her father’s recent demise. Within also explores persistent, symbols of memory, loss, transit and love and allows for the materials themselves to be part of the subject matter.
