AMA Tasmania President Dr Stuart Day says today’s announcement regarding the allocation of a further $4 million to fully fund a new $12.1 million St Helens District Hospital will hopefully improve the health outcomes for Tasmania’s living on the state’s east coast.

Dr Day said AMA Tasmania supports the State Government’s initiative to provide regional and rural communities with better access to high quality health services.

“District Hospitals have played a vital role in attracting and retaining rural general practitioners to the smaller communities of Tasmania,” said Dr Day.

“District hospitals also have an important role in delivering care locally and the stabilisation of acutely unwell patients before transfer to our four major acute care hospitals.

“It remains important for all Tasmanians that they have access to acute hospitals when they need them and that there are an adequate number of beds in our acute care hospitals.”
