Liberal Government still not moving on critical tourism infrastructure
Labor’s comprehensive tourism blueprint will enhance industry
The Hodman Liberal Government still has no plan to build and enhance critical Tasmanian tourism infrastructure despite forecasts to grow the tourism industry to 1.5 million visitors by 2020.
Shadow Tourism Minister Scott Bacon said it was clear from Environment Minister Matthew Groom’s announcement today for a $50,000 plan to develop a plan for Freycinet that the Hodgman Government had no strategy to actually build the infrastructure the state’s key tourism destinations need.
“Our regions are under on-going pressure not only to sustain quality visitor experiences but build the facilities tourists demand,” Mr Bacon said.
“The best that Mr Groom has been able to come up with today after more than three years in government is a plan to plan for future facilities with vague references to vitally needed infrastructure including roads and water and sewerage management in the Freycinet area.
“The Hodgman Government has failed to deliver for the tourism industry and it’s clear has no plan to deliver any time soon.
“In contrast, a re-elected Labor Government has a real plan with a Ten Year Regional Tourism Strategy to enhance the industry and develop new business.
“Labor’s $50 million regional infrastructure investment fund would deliver for locations like Bruny Island, Freycinet and Cradle Mountain with infrastructure and basic services such as roads, water, toilets, power and parking.”
