The noise from gas-powered devices employed in a Tasmanian winery region to scare off crop-eating birds has turned the area into an “artillery range”, an irate neighbour has said.
Lyn Taylor from Cranbrook, near Swansea, told ABC Radio she and her neighbours were sick of hearing gas guns discharging throughout the day.
“Last summer I had an average of, I’d say, 40-50 shots per hour, clearly audible, sounding like a shotgun blast, or in some cases like a high powered rifle,” she said.
“This summer I’m feeling a wee-bit relieved, in that we’re down to between 12 and 20 shots.”
Ms Taylor said she believed the noise mostly came from Brown Brothers’ Devil’s Corner vineyard, with other vineyards using netting to protect their grapes. Brown Brothers declined to comment.
