ALP-Sisterhood 2017 Young Woman of the Year Award: celebrating the contributions of young women in our community on International Women’s Day.
Chloe Shorten will be in Tasmania tonight to celebrate IWD and the achievements of 6 young northern Tasmania women who are vying for the 2017 ALPS Young Woman of the Year Award.
There are 6 young women nominated all worthy of this award from the north of Tasmania.
The ALP sisterhood was initially established by Margaret Whitlam in the late 1960’s to support women to make a difference. The Launceston Chapter of ALPS is the last remaining chapter in Australia and introduced the ALPS Young Women’s Award three years ago to recognise the accomplishments of young women in the community who have experienced some adversity but had risen above that to contribute to their community. The winner of the award, in addition to recognition, receives a $1000 cheque. Last year the award went to Tessa Wynn from Launceston, a young mother working her way through University who also volunteered in her community.
Chloe is the daughter of former Governor General, Lady Quentin Bryce, the first woman to occupy the office of Governor General.
Nominations will open in November 2017 for the 2018 award and members of the community are encouraged to nominate young women in their communities who strive to make a difference having experienced some difficulty or challenges in their own lives. Details about the award are available from the ALPS facebook page.
