In response to recently printed articles SPF Tasmania fully supports Huon Aquaculture, Francis Bender, and position for the need to reduce fish stocks in Macquarie Harbour.

SFP Tasmania believes without a significant reduction that this continuing degrading of the harbour itself will create an environment prone to aquatic diseases which may not only have a devastating effect on the 1/2 billion dollar salmon industry but may also spread to our fresh water trout and have a devastating effect on what is considered to be the best wild brown trout fishery in the world.

The scientific evidence in possession of the State government would demonstrate a concerning increase in water temperature and a dangerous drop in water oxygen levels resulting in stresses to the fish and negatively impacting the harbour itself.

Tasmania has a proud tradition of being clean and green, and we can ill afford to destroy Macquarie Harbour for short term profits.

SFP Tasmania does not support increasing fish stocking levels in Macquarie Harbour. Stock levels must be reduced to ensure the harbour remains a long term sustainable farming option; we owe it to future generations so they too can enjoy a positive environmental experience in the harbour.

SFP Tasmania calls on the government to appoint a truly independent regulatory body to protect the aquatic environment ensuring long term sustainable aquatic farming practices based on scientific evidence.

SFP Tasmania is fully supportive of Frances Bender, in her stance which is in the best long term best interest of the State at heart.
