A new marriage equality campaign ( Australia takes a stand, here ) will encourage Government members to speak out for a free vote so the reform can pass.
The campaign from Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) targets those Government members who already support marriage equality.
PFLAG spokesperson, Shelley Argent, said,
“It’s not enough for Liberals and Nationals to support marriage equality when they can’t vote for it.”
“They need to find their voice and speak out for a free vote on marriage equality.”
“Our new campaign will encourage voters to email Liberals and Nationals who support marriage equality to demand a free vote so our sons and daughters can have the rights and responsibilities that come with marriage.”
Mrs Argent said the debate about a plebiscite is over.
“The idea of a plebiscite was not supported by LGBTI community, the Australian public or the parliament so it’s time for the Government to opt for what should have been their policy all along, a free vote in Parliament.”
“It’s time to end the procrastination and do what’s right, not easiest.”
The Make It Law campaign also targets Labor members who have yet to support marriage equality.
25 Liberal and National MPs and senators will be targetted through specific ads of the type attached to this media release.
Voters will be able to email their federal members through the following site: www.demandafreevote.com.au
