Runnymede, an elegant National Trust (Tasmania) property in New Town, is currently turning back the hands of time and reviving an early technique in wallpaper manufacture.

Wallpaper researcher and reproducer Alan Townsend, most recently known for his work at Oak Lodge in Richmond, has been working closely with the trust to recreate the beautiful heritage wallpaper in Runnymede’s stately dining room.

A true labour of love, the wallpaper’s unique pattern has been painstakingly recreated from samples meticulously stored by the National Trust volunteers decades ago.

Originally hung in the 1860’s, the valuable paper is a sophisticated and luminous satin ground design of French origin.

Designed as part of a suite of papers with 44 individual silk-screened prints per roll, the paper totals an incredible 924 individual prints for the dining room alone.

The National Trust’s 18th century home and gardens provides a stunning backdrop for this exciting Macquarie Group sponsored installation.

Runnymede is open Tuesday to Friday and Sunday afternoon.
