Today’s 2016 NAPLAN Final Report provides detailed analysis of the previously released 2016 NAPLAN Preliminary Report.
The Hodgman Liberal Government is focused on improving literacy and numeracy and today’s report confirms Tasmanian students are improving and closing the gap towards our goal of being at or above the national average on every measurement by 2020.
In addition, the gaps between Indigenous students and non-Indigenous students in Tasmania continue to be amongst the smallest in the nation.
When compared to 2015, the gap between Tasmania’s Indigenous students and Non-Indigenous students closed in 15 of the 20 assessments in 2016.
Around 25,000 Tasmanian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across Government, Catholic and Independent schools undertook the tests in May, with approximately 290 Tasmanian Government school students excelling.
While it is very encouraging to see improvements in our younger student results, the Hodgman Government is committed to driving further improvement through our focus on evidence based improvements, targeted investment and prioritising students with the greatest need.
There is no doubt that Tasmania’s education system is on the right path, but there is more work to be done.
The new Tasmanian Education Act is the next step in our long term plan for education to ensure every Tasmanian student can look forward to a brighter future.
