Independent JLN Senator for Tasmania Jacqui Lambie has asked the Parliamentary Drafters to draw up two amendments to the Government’s Backpacker legislation – in preparation for next week’s Senate sittings – when she will try and force the federal government to lower their tax on backpacker seasonal workers.

“I’ll take two Backpacker Tax amendments – one at 0% and another at 10.5% to Parliament next week. During the in-committee stages of the backpacker legislation debate I will firstly move for an amendment which takes the backpacker tax to 0%.

If the government, Labor, Greens and crossbench senators decide not to support 0% – then I’ll try again with an amendment which takes the backpacker tax to 10.5%.” said Senator Lambie.

“ I hope all Tasmanian Senators, no matter which party they represent – put Tasmania first and party loyalty second – when it comes to this matter. A backpacker tax at 0% will undo most of the harm that has been forced on our Farmers by the Liberal / National government’s handling of this matter – and is my preferred outcome.

However, if Labor and other Senators can’t support 0% – I have high hopes they’ll support a 10.5% backpacker tax. It will undo some of the damage caused to Tasmania’s farmers and our tourism industry. At 10.5% it will make us at least internationally competitive.” said Senator Lambie.

“For good reasons, the primary industry sector has walked away from the Government’s plan of a 19% tax which is not internationally competitive. And I’m begging the Tasmanian Liberal Senators in particular – to listen to our Farmers who have spoken out in the last 24 hours about the need for a rate much lower than the proposed 19%.” said Senator Lambie.
