TasWater’s water treatment team at Barrington has been identified at producing the best tasting water in the whole of Australia.

It has won this year’s Water Industry Operators Association of Australia’s (WIOA) Best Tap Water in Australia competition.

The competition was held today in Marysville, Victoria, the town from which last year’s winning sample was taken.

Using a blind taste test, samples were assessed on colour (water should be translucent without any white or brown tones), clarity (crystal clear water with minimal turbidity is preferred), odour and taste.

Barrington Water Treatment Plant supplies water for Sheffield and Railton and won the right to enter the national competition after success in the state round of the water taste test with entries from treatment plants across Tasmania.

The national competition is part of National Water Week, (16-22 October) and the Marysville community took part in the judging along with water industry specialists.

Barrington’s water will now go on to represent Australia at the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Competition held in West Virginia, USA.

TasWater CEO Michael Brewster says it is terrific Barrington has taken out the prize.

“It’s a real honour for not only the staff at the Water Treatment Plant itself but also recognises the hard work and professionalism of all our TasWater staff whose job it is, to manage drinking water to communities across Tasmania.”

“TasWater aims to supply quality water to all our customers where ever they are. As we all know in some parts of Tasmania this has been a challenge but we are working hard to improve the situation, spending around $100 million each year on upgrading infrastructure.”

New treatment plants have been built at Mole Creek, on Flinders Island and under construction at Ringarooma.

Gretna, King Island, Bushy Park and Glenora too are in line to get fully treated water with work on these projects underway.
