Today’s announcement by the Minister for Resources Guy Barnett, that he will consider removing the moratorium over native forests scheduled for reservation under the Tasmanian Forests Agreement, is a clear indication that the Tasmanian Government intends to abandon efforts to secure Forest Stewardship Council certification.
“This government has played out a cruel charade on forests policy”, said Save the Tarkine Campaign Coordinator, Scott Jordan.
“By removing the moratorium this government will guarantee failure in FSC certification, and end any pretence that this government’s policies can provide security to our forests or the timber industry”.
“Forests, including 100,402 hectares within the Tarkine, or 50,000 Melbourne Cricket Grounds, will be back in the realm of the chainsaws and the woodchippers, and the species that rely on these forests once again under siege. Tasmanian timber will once again be toxic in the marketplace”.
“Save the Tarkine will continue our campaign to see these forests properly protected in a Tarkine National Park”.
