THE GIST
Renowned naturalist Edward Prendick is stranded on a remote island with the mysterious Doctor Moreau and his assistant Montgomery. The island is also home to a bizarre community of misfits whose rituals seem to deify Moreau at the centre of a twisted religion.
Who are these creatures? Where have they come from? And why are there such piercing screams coming from Moreau’s chambers?
This new adaptation of HG Wells’ classic novella evokes a singularly unsettling vision of scientific progress gone awry. Drawing together physical theatre, puppetry and choreographic movement, The Island of Doctor Moreau is a brand new creation stitched together of disparate parts. Dark, atmospheric and absurd, this production will offer a tantalising glimpse into the mind of a scientist not bound by traditional notions of ethics and morality.
THE QUOTABLE QUOTES FROM DIRECTOR ALEX RIGOZZI
“The novel has a peculiar and unique atmosphere. It’s creepy, it’s unsettling. It doesn’t entirely work. I guess I liked the imperfect parts of it as much as anything.”
“I wanted to direct it because it was hard. Too hard to recreate verbatim, so we have had to come up with creative solutions. How do you make a world like the one that Wells did, but on the stage with all of the limitations that implies? Either you spend $50K on it, and have everyone in lavishly designed beast person costumes, or you make the audience’s imaginations do the work, you hide things, you make it mysterious.”
