The Tasmanian Breath of Fresh Air Film Festival has officially launched its 2016 program.
The seventh annual BOFA Film Festival will screen 37 films from around the world from Thursday, November 10 to Sunday, November 13 at the Inveresk Precinct in Launceston.
The 44 page full colour program was officially launched by Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten and will be widely distributed around the state.
Spread over four venues at Inveresk, BOFA 2016 will offer 37 of the world’s best features and documentaries, 50 + short films, film making master-classes for adults and kids, and a Smart City Action Session over the four action-packed days.
The BOFA Festival Lounge offers Tasmanian wine, cider and beer plus Tassie food platters and live music on Friday and Saturday evenings. Food vans and bean bags also offer an al fresco buzz to the festival experience.
Opening night (Thursday 10 Nov) Red Carpet film will be Paolo Virzi’s exuberant Italian comedy-drama, fresh from Cannes film Festival, Like Crazy. A glamorous after-party at Mud Bar, Launceston will start the festival in matching European style.
Other movie highlights include the Sundance Festival’s Best Film, Weiner, the story of Anthony Weiner’s scandal-ridden run for Mayor of New York, and Cannes Festival winners The Salesman (Iran) and Graduation (Romania).
There will be a strong Australian focus with features like Goldstone, Ivan Sen’s follow up to Mystery Road, the first feature from Tasmanian-born Damien Power, Killing Ground, and the recent winner of the $100,000 Best Film prize at the CinefestOZ festival, Rosemary Myers’ Girl Asleep.
Another high point of the 2016 Festival will be the 10th anniversary special retrospective screening of one of Australia’s best loved features, Kenny, to be attended by the director, Clayton Jacobson.
Last year’s successful theme “what’s your BOFA?” highlighted the many different aspects of the Festival with something to appeal to every type of audience.
The concept will be expanded this year with the Festival offering FEATURES BOFA, DOCO BOFA, FAMILY BOFA, FOOD & WINE BOFA, IDEAS BOFA, GENDER BOFA, AUSSIE BOFA, SHORTS BOFA and COMMUNITY BOFA.
This year families can enjoy the festival with great family films at concession price for kids and with a pop up playgroup for the littlies.
Festival Director Owen Tilbury said that BOFA was now recognised nationally as a significant event on the Australian film festival calendar drawing audience from around Tasmania and the mainland centres.
“Attendance has increased five-fold since we opened and we’re confident that this strong program – plus other events like the Festival of Roses on the same weekend – will attract even more Tasmanians and interstate visitors to the 2016 BOFA Film Festival.”
