GOVERNMENT MUST BAN THEM
The Independent Member for Denison, Andrew Wilkie, has joined Senator for South Australia Nick Xenophon and Member for Mayo Rebekha Sharkie who have given notice of a motion calling on the Government to ban gambling advertising during daytime sporting broadcasts.
“The new Parliament presents a perfect opportunity to finally achieve meaningful gambling reform and we’re starting with tackling gambling advertising,” Mr Wilkie said.
“While there are currently some restrictions on when gambling advertising can be broadcast, there is a loophole that allows it to be shown during sporting events at children’s viewing times.
“This means that at any time of day, and in particular when children are watching their sporting heroes, they are being bombarded with ads for sports betting.
“This is completely out of step with community expectations. Moreover we know that exposure to gambling advertising can serve to normalise gambling for children.
“People are sick and tired of wall-to-wall gambling advertising and it’s beyond time for the Government to stand up to the industry and do something about it.”
