Last Thursday, Waikato Regional Council approved the addition of the words “Poison baits or carcasses may be present in waterways” to their 1080 poison warnings signs.
The resolution passed 7 votes For, (Crs White, Graf, Husband, Vercoe, Hennebry, Stark, and Buckley) 2 votes Against (Crs Kneebone, Mahuta), 3 Abstained (Crs Southgate, Simcock, A Livingston).
When the aerial drops are undertaken, the poison baits are dropped into most, if not all streams within the operational areas. Poisoned carcasses are left to decompose where they fall, be that on land or in water (despite the warning label saying they should be buried deeply or burned, and that they are “ecotoxic”).
