The unexpected re-emergence of the historic Lake Myer in Hobart’s CBD has seen quick and decisive action by Hobart City Council Heritage Officers.
Whilst little is known about Lake Myer it is understood that this natural body of water, at the lowest point of the Hobart Rivulet, was once adored by locals and a favourite gathering place for families during summer.
“In it’s heyday, the late 1800’s, families would gather around the nearby grasslands to have picnics, swim in the lake and buy some on-trend fashions from Myer” said Cornelius Delbert from the “Society To Overthrow Progress” or “STOP” for short. “We as a society are pleased that council have recognised the historical importance of this lake and have taken this action”.
The lake has reclaimed its original footprint and apart from a few excavators and “On Sale” dresses from Portmans floating around in it the lake is pretty much in its original pristine condition.
“We are delighted with this new feature for Hobart and we think this will really put us on the map” said Lord Mayor Sue Hickey. “I mean a beautiful lake right between Cat and Fiddle and Liverpool Street, If Portmans install a balcony it will be a beautiful place to sit and relax”.
And whilst everyone seems supportive some apparently have their own reasons for not opposing the Heritage Officers decision. Deputy Mayor Ron Christie overheard earlier today saying “Christ I am not going up against them, they would probably heritage list my front yard or something. LOL”.
The Myer developer was contacted for comment but was being attended to by paramedics after reports of heart palpitations.
Officers from Hobart City Council are expected to lodge the heritage request early next week.
