Some time ago you kindly supported IHOS Opera and we are now writing to you to invite your support of a new Tasmanian work – an exciting and unique oratorio for voices and brass.
A Tasmanian Requiem is about loss of innocence. It is set in an Antipodean paradise where European arrival plays out an ageless story of sin and exile that reaches to the moral heart of humanity. A creative work without precedent, it searches our island’s dark history; seeking opportunity for atonement through a layering of literary and musical traditions from Europe with the ever-present culture of Aboriginal Tasmania.
A Tasmanian Requiem looks beyond the beginnings of civilisation to confront the burden of colonial history. It is a journey through grief and hope that will leave you moved and inspired by the freedom that exists in a moment of truth.
This is a ground-breaking collaboration by Helen Thomson (composer), Greg Lehman (librettist), Julie Gough (visual artist/set designer) and Frances Butler (producer). In production we also have the talents of Robert Jarman (director), Gary Wain (musical director) and the Island Brass Quintet.
As you know, these are difficult times to make innovative and risky art. We have been able to secure development support from Arts Tasmania and the Australia Council, and the support of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, but still have a long way to go.
We have set a goal to raise $25,000 by June 30 to ensure the work can be premiered in April 2017 at the Theatre Royal.
Constantine Koukias is generously supporting the project by mentoring Greg with libretto and advising Frances in production. As you supported IHOS, we ask you to help us create this wholly Tasmanian work by making a fully tax-deductible donation – it will make a big difference.
A Tasmanian Requiem is auspiced by Tasmania Performs, an initiative of Arts Tasmania managed by Performing Lines.
It’s easy to donate via our auspice partner – Performing Lines: just make your donation by one of the methods below, complete the form and send it to Performing Lines.
Thank you for being part of the IHOS family over the years. We hope you will support this new production and the creative team of A Tasmanian Requiem.
Warm regards,
