The Tasmanian Government’s commitment to the continued roll out of Gonski is very welcome and Will Hodgman has thrown down the gauntlet to Malcolm Turnbull to follow suit.

“The Hodgman Liberal Government is continuing its commitment to the full six-year implementation of Gonski and they’ve thrown down the gauntlet to Malcolm Turnbull to follow suit,” Helen Richardson, AEU Tasmanian President said.

“The State Government’s funding commitment to Gonski will be well received by schools but it must be remembered that two-thirds of the funding comes from the Federal Government and that’s why it’s critical that Malcolm Turnbull holds up his end of the agreement.”

“Spending on school infrastructure is important but the most critical elements in those workplaces are the dedicated teachers and other staff and we’re yet to see the full repair of the original cuts the state government made in its 2014 budget.”

As for the rest of the Education and TAFE Budget, we’re still working through the details and will have more to say on that soon, said Ms Richardson.
