Minister Should End Duck Hunting

The whimsical performance of Duck Lake by wildlife protesters on Moulting Lagoon was a courageous attempt to draw attention to the archaic and dishonourable practice of shooting native birds for sport.

Minister Groom should celebrate this centenary year of the nearby Freycinet National Park by declaring an end to duck hunting.

Tasmania is one of the last states that still permits this pointless slaughter of native birds.

The originators of Tasmania’s parks would be incredulous that this sport continues. The recent summer was our hottest on record, just another of the many pressures on the habitat of these wetland birds, and they need as much protection as we can give them to survive.

Moulting Lagoon is an internationally recognised wetland important for breeding and a destination for migratory birds.
