Do you know which country or region the food for your last meal came from? This is a question that a group of Tasmanians want you to ask when buying and preparing foods throughout the month of March.

Now in its 4th year, The Tassievore Eat Local Challenge encourages Tasmanian’s to reconnect with their local food supply while supporting Tasmanian growers and businesses throughout the month of March.
“Choosing local produce and shopping at locally owned businesses is great for the Tasmanian economy”, states Lissa Villeneuve, Food Program Manager with Sustainable Living Tasmania. “But more than that, it also tastes better, is often more nutritious and can have a much smaller environmental footprint” continues Ms. Villeneuve.

Initiated by Sustainable Living Tasmania, the challenge promotes local producers, backyard growing and celebrates the fantastic produce we have available on our doorstep in Tasmania.
During the month of March there will be four weekly challenges, with great prizes to be won:

Week 1 – Get Growing
Week 2 – Ask for Local
Week 3 – Find your Food Story
Week 4 – Share

“We are asking Tasmanians to take the Challenge – it can be as big or small of a commitment as you want” says Ms Villeneuve. “We just want people to try to do more than they are currently doing. Whether that means planting a few herbs on the balcony, sharing a Tasmanian meal with friends or seeking out Tasmanian produce at your local shop.”

“The quality and variety of produce we have available in Tasmania is amazing and some of the best in the world – why wouldn’t I want to enjoy Tassie foods at every opportunity?” asks Ms Villeneuve.

Resources such as a Local Food Directory and Tassievore Recipes have been developed to assist people taking the Challenge and are available all year round on the website – www.slt.org.au/tassievore. While the Challenge is focussed on the month of March, organisers encourage people to make every day a Tassievore day.

Photo opportunity: Tassievore organisers can bring along a selection of Tasmanian foods and drinks for a Tassievore breakfast, lunch or snacks and copies of the promotional material.
