SOUTHERN CROSS CARE STAFF AT THE YARAANDOO AGED CARE
RESIDENTIAL FACILITY IN SOMERSET WILL RALLY OUTSIDE THE FACILITY
TODAY AT 2:45PM TO HIGHLIGHT THE CRISIS IN AGED CARE.
Staff employed at Southern Cross Care facilities across the state are sending a message to
their CEO, the Government and the community that resident care is being compromised due
to excessive workloads created by underfunding and short staffing.
People employed in Aged Care across the state tell of residents who eat cold food because of
not enough staff to assist with meals; of residents who are left in bed until late morning or
early afternoon; and of residents who receive minimal one on one meaningful contact
because workers are just too busy to spend quality time with them.
“These residents are among the most vulnerable people in our community. Our mothers,
fathers, grandparents and other valued community members. To think that their care and
quality of life is being compromised due to underfunding and short staffing is distressing,
especially for our Members, who are employed in Aged Care,” HACSU Assistant State
Secretary Robbie Moore said.
“The issue is not just a Southern Cross Care issue but an industry-wide one.”
“It’s like a dirty little secret that nobody wants to speak about. SCC staff have had enough and
are calling on management to meet with them to discuss these issues.”
To date management has refused to meet with HACSU Delegates.
“The message these workers are sending is that quality care for residents in aged care is
becoming a thing of the past.” Robbie Moore said.
