The Hodgman Liberal Government must detail concrete plans to replace the Spirit of Tasmania vessels during GBEs tomorrow.
Labor Leader Bryan Green said he understood the Liberal Government’s only plan is to announce a new committee to push the issue beyond the next election.
“Replacing the Spirits is a massive challenge for TT-Line but also a massive opportunity for the tourism industry,” Mr Green said.
“We need answers from Government about its strategy, not another talk fest.
“What provision is the Government making for the replacement of the Spirits?
“Where is the money going to come from and when will they set a date for the purchase of new ships?
The Auditor General has noted: “The future replacements of vessels will not be possible without Government funding. Replacement vessels are likely to be required during the period 2023-28 at a total estimated cost of $600 million (at current prices).”
“The Auditor General has also confirmed that the recent refurbishments of the Spirits has not significantly added to their resale value.
“The Government’s strategy has delayed replacements and severely limited TT-Line’s ability to fund new ships.
“Decisions need to be made now to set a clear path for TT-Line and the Spirits – to delay these decisions only adds to the uncertainty and shows the Government is light on for answers.
“It’s time for the Hodgman Government to reveal what their plans are and face scrutiny over their decisions, rather than continue to hide behind committees.”
