Young people of Devonport are invited to join Tasmanian artist Anzara Clark in a series of ephemeral art workshops that explore death.
Make Your Mark: Death explores the transient nature of life and certainty of death in a series of six workshops during the summer holidays, culminating in an exhibition at Mersey Bluff. Participants will discuss and explore the theme of death and create a piece of ephemeral art within this theme. Devonport’s popular Mersey Bluff will be used as the basis for the artworks and materials used in the workshop series; particularly referencing and using the coastline’s natural materials as a link to the broad theme of death and decay.
“Death is part of life, but it is not always easy to talk about. When words are not enough to express our feelings about death and loss, art can be a powerful voice.” – Anzara Clark
The workshop series will conclude on Saturday 30 January at Mersey Bluff, where participants will install their artworks in the environment and share their ideas and works with family, friends and community.
Anzara Clark is an artist living and working on the North West coast of Tasmania. She uses textiles, paper and recyclables in sculptural, relief and garment based artworks that explore issues of cultural and individual identity, transience, memory, and transformative and critical human experiences.
Anzara has a particular interest in using art to start conversations about death, dying, grief and loss. Because of this, much of her work contains ephemeral elements and processes. In 2015 she has had two solo exhibitions on the North West Coast and has had work included in the Paper Garments for the Grave Exhibition. She has also facilitated the ‘Mourning The Missing’ Project.
Make Your Mark is a partnership program between Devonport Regional Gallery (Devonport City Council) and Youth, Family & Community Connections. The project is supported by the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.
