The Federal Liberal Government’s decision to claw back $46 million in funds for forest management has left Tasmanians exposed to the risk of more bushfires.
Labor Leader Bryan Green condemned the cuts as dangerous and short-sighted.
“The Liberals have taken away $46 million that was allocated to manage our forests into the future, including fuel reduction to combat the threat of fire,” Mr Green said.
“The State Liberals’ response has been pathetic. They need to explain how they will now pay for the management of hundreds of thousands of hectares of forest?
“Forestry Tasmania and the Parks and Wildlife Service are already stretched to the limit and their capacity to prepare for bushfires has been greatly diminished. How is the State Government going to ensure that Tasmanians are not exposed to a greater threat of fire because we’ve lost this funding?
“Richard Colbeck’s argument that we should be thankful for what we are given is pitiful and highlights the lack of advocacy from Liberal MPs and Senators.
“This is yet another example of how the Liberals have abandoned the forest industry.”
