Minister for Tourism and International Education, Senator Richard Colbeck, said the Tasmanian Tourism Awards provide an excellent display of the state’s high quality tourism experiences.

Senator Colbeck attended the Tasmanian Tourism Awards Dinner in Hobart tonight and presented the Gustav Award for Best Tourism Development to Pumphouse Point, which was recognised as the best new and innovative product in the last 12 months.

“Pumphouse Point was originally built as a pumping station on Lake St Clair by the Tasmanian Hydro-Electric Commission in the 1940s. Recently it has been transformed into a wilderness retreat offering boutique accommodation and nature-tourism experiences inside Tasmania’s Wilderness World Heritage Area,” Senator Colbeck said.

“I congratulate Pumphouse Point on winning this award and commend them for the unique product they bring to Tasmania’s booming tourism sector – it is a fantastic example of the quality of tourism in the state.

“It’s great to see Tasmania recognising the importance of Chinese tourists with the addition of the China Market Export Development Award for the first year.

“Congratulations to Curringa Farm Tours & Accommodation for winning the award which recognises excellence in the planning, development and delivery of tourism products and services for the mainland Chinese market.

Senator Colbeck said the tourism industry makes a valuable contribution to Tasmania, injecting more than $1 billion to the economy and supporting about 37,000 jobs.

“The Australian Government is focussed on embracing opportunities and continuing to grow our tourism sector – including maintaining our reputation for providing a high quality tourism experience.”

The Tasmanian Tourism Awards are presented annually by the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania on behalf of the tourism industry. The awards recognise outstanding achievement across all sectors of the tourism industry in Tasmania.

Tonight’s winners will represent Tasmania at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in Melbourne in February 2016.
