12 November 2015: Hobart local Jessica Norton has been selected to appear on the cover of this year’s Hobart Yellow Pages® and White Pages®, which starts distribution from 14 November 2015.
Jessica has been selected under the theme, Australian Stars Rising Above, which celebrates up and coming Australians who are achieving beyond their years and making positive changes in their community.
Jessica is changing the way people dine around Hobart. Inspired by her grandmother, she developed a love for cooking from early on in her childhood. Despite suffering multiple food allergies and dietary conditions, including coeliac disease, Jessica never lost her passion for food. Jessica decided to share her knowledge around allergies, recipes and eateries with the wider Hobart community.
At just 23 years old, Jessica is the founder of ‘Eat Safe, Live Well’, an initiative to educate and bring food allergy sufferers together. The brand launched as a pocket guide and has since evolved to include a website and mobile app. Aiming to allow allergy sufferers to eat out with safety and confidence in and around Hobart, the Eat Safe booklet, ‘Eating Out,’ provides information on dining in Hobart for allergy sufferers.
Jessica donates more than 30 hours of her time each week to the brand which features information from local restaurants, cafes, dieticians and naturopaths and is available through multiple platforms.
Through school visits, Jessica regularly works with a chef and naturopath to conduct cooking demonstrations and workshops addressing hundreds of local youth. Since its creation, ‘Eat Safe, Live Well’ has experienced great acclaim and support from the local community. Dedicated to eating and living well, Jessica will continue to share her food expertise with the local community. With her a holistic approach to living, Jessica has helped raise awareness of local health services and venues that provide opportunities for improved wellbeing and a healthier lifestyle.
“Eat Safe, Live Well has introduced symbols to represent allergy-safe Hobart eateries, with many businesses adopting the visuals. These can be seen by simply walking past the restaurants or cafés. Now the program includes advice around health and wellbeing as well as providing information about local health services.” Jessica said.
Each year Sensis, the publisher of the Yellow Pages and White Pages, has recognised the efforts of local people in their communities by celebrating their achievements on the covers of its books.
Yellow Pages Marketing Specialist, Beth Kyle, said this year’s theme, Australian Stars Rising Above, recognises young Australians volunteering their time to champion projects that are helping their community thrive.
“This year we have discovered young change makers across Australia who are stepping up to make a difference in their community. We wanted to honour these rising stars and elevate them to a place where everyone can celebrate them,” she said.
“This year we are thrilled to recognise Jessica’s efforts in creating a brighter future for her community.”
