Planning Tasmania’s electric future 4

New technology including electric vehicles and battery storage are set to radically transform the nature of our transport and electricity system and Tasmania is ideally placed to be at the forefront of these changes.

Public talks to be held in Launceston and Hobart over the next two days will give the public the opportunity to find out more about these changes and to have their say.

Clive Attwater from the Tasmanian branch of the Australian Electric Vehicle Association (AEVA) will present a concept for an Electric Highway – a network of pubic EV fast-charging stations.

“For less than the cost of building one petrol station, Tasmania could have a public charging network that would allow electric vehicles to access any part of the state. As well as boosting the sales of electric vehicles, this would promote Tasmania’s sustainable tourism and provide a boost to many businesses around the state.” said Mr Attwater.

“Other states have started installing charging infrastructure, but Tasmania has the opportunity to be the first state that is fully accessible to electric vehicles, with the added bonus of charging up on Tasmania’s largely renewable electricity.”

Jack Gilding, Executive Officer of TREA will explain the process of electricity tariff reform, what it means for energy policy and how it will affect the introduction of new technology such as electric vehicle and battery storage.

“Decisions being made in the next 6 months will determine how electricity prices will be structured in 2017-2019 and will influence prices for as much as the next 15 years. These changes will have implications for solar PV, for energy efficiency, and for new technology such as electric vehicles and battery storage.” said Mr Gilding “There are opportunities for public input into these process, but unless people get involved, the decisions will be left to the existing big industry participants.”
